Why Is Less More?
“Do less, do less.”
“Can you do the same movement with 80% less effort?”
“Could you make the movement smaller?”
“Could you maintain the same awareness of the movement and do it even more slowly?”
These are just a few of the phrases you'll hear me say in an Awareness Through Movement® lesson.
So why is "less" so important in the Feldenkrais Method®?
My sense is that we've been taught, somewhere along the line, that progress and healing come from doing more.
More exercise.
More stretching.
More discipline.
More effort.
More things we know we should be doing but somehow never quite manage to keep up with.
The problem with "more" is that it often asks us to become a different person overnight. It assumes that if we're not where we want to be, the answer is simply to try harder.
For a while, that can be motivating.
Over time, it becomes exhausting.
The expectations become so high that we feel like we've failed before we've even begun.
In my experience, real change rarely happens that way.
Whether you're learning a new skill, recovering from an injury, training for a sporting event, or simply trying to feel better in your body, meaningful progress is usually built through small, achievable, consistent improvements over time.
This is where Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® offers an alternative perspective to many physiotherapy and sports regimes. It doesn't ask for more, but, in fact, less. If you are new here, you can read more about the Feldenkrais method® in my blog “What is Feldenkrais”.
Feldenkrais is a "yes... and..." approach to change.
I can be fit and do less.
I can be healthy and have an injury.
I can have a body that is changing with time and still feel vital, capable, and active.
I can become stronger without pushing harder.
I can gain more with less pain.
Instead of focusing on fitness or structure, Feldenkrais focuses on function.
Because when movement becomes easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable, strength, flexibility, and confidence follow naturally.
Progress isn't measured by how hard you've worked or how much you've suffered.
It's measured by what you can feel.
Less stiffness.
Standing taller.
More energy.
More confidence.
A sense that your body is working with you rather than against you.
These small changes might seem insignificant at first, but they matter.
Small changes become real wins.
Real wins build momentum.
Momentum builds confidence.
And confidence changes what feels possible.
Less isn't about lowering your expectations.
It's about choosing a smarter path forward.
A path that is achievable, sustainable, and kind.
A path that allows you to build trust in your body rather than constantly trying to fix it.
Less isn't giving up.
Less is more.
More function.
More confidence.
More freedom.
More gain with less pain.
